China asks US to stop escalating South China Sea situation

China's Defense Minister Wei Fenghe (pictured) told his American counterpart Mark Esper on Monday that Beijing will continue protecting its territorial sovereignty in the South China Sea and called on the United States to "stop flexing muscles" and escalating the situation in the region, according to the Chinese Defense Ministry.

Furthermore, Wei warned the US against destabilizing the situation in Taiwan and insisted Beijing will not tolerate a major "Taiwan secession."

During their meeting in Bangkok, the two officials also discussed the role of military ties, which they see as a crucial part of bilateral relations. Wei and Esper agreed their militaries should jointly promote cooperation and stability.
