China denies 'outside rumors' about trade talks

During a regular press briefing on Thursday, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce told the media that the trade teams from Washington and Beijing are continuing the dialogue on trade, but failed to offer any new information on the progress of talks.

Ministry Spokesperson Gao Feng refused to provide further information regarding the trade talks, saying that the two sides would "strive to reach phase one trade deal," noting that "outside rumors" on possible disagreements are "not accurate."

Gao was possibly referring to yesterday's reports which suggested there is a chance for the interim trade accord not to be signed by the year's end, as a result, sent global stock markets plunging. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump reiterated that Beijing indeed wants a trade deal, but that the real question is whether he wants to sign it as the US is profiting from levies imposed on Chinese goods.
