China hopes to meet US 'halfway' on trade

The United States and Chinese teams leading the trade negotiations have "maintained effective communication," China's Ministry of Commerce spokesperson Gao Feng told the press on Friday during a regular brief.

The spokesman added that China strongly protests additional the tariffs on Chinese imports and expressed hope that Washington will meet Beijing "halfway" and resolve the trade dispute "on the basis of equality and mutual respect." He said the two sides are currently discussing their next meeting, which is supposed to take place in the US in September, noting that it is highly important to create the necessary conditions for the two sides to resume discussions, Feng stated.

Yesterday, China called on the US to reconsider imposing additional tariffs on Chinese goods, adding that if the talks do continue in next month, then both sides should create conditions for the way forward and sealing a deal that would put a stop to the dispute.
