China's gas imports at new high as Russia pipeline extends

China's Customs Administration said on Wednesday that the amount of gas imported to the country over the past year reached a new high in October at 13.42 billion cubic meters, only 3.8% lower compared to the same month in 2021.

Next to central Asian countries, Russia is one of China's largest gas suppliers. According to Chinese state media, the Taian-Taixing section of the eastern route of the China-Russia gas pipeline started operating today, with the deliveries now reaching the final destination - the major Chinese business hub of Shanghai.

China's imports of Russian gas (pipeline and LNG) jumped by about a third this year since the start of the war in Ukraine and the reduction in Russia's gas deliveries to the West. The majority of the deliveries come through the Syberia pipeline which the two countries have been constructing for the last eight years.
