China's UK envoy: We can quell HK protests swiftly

China's ambassador to the United Kingdom, Liu Xiaoming, stated on Thursday that any unrest in Hong Kong can easily be put to an end, but stressed that "violence" in the city is "posing a severe challenge to law and order." No one will be allowed to jeopardize the "One Country, Two Systems" arrangement that granted autonomy to the former British colony for 50 years after the handover to the People's Republic of China in 1997, the diplomat underlined and affirmed the situation will end "in an orderly way."

Some of the moves by protesters show signs of terrorism, Liu warned, calling out unnamed Western politicians for allegedly supporting radicals in Hong Kong. Beijing believes there is a "dark hand" behind the unrest, seeking to make the situation a problem for China, the ambassador in London explained, and called on foreign forces to stop interfering in China's internal affairs. The relationship with the UK should be based on non-interference, Liu noted.

Turning to trade, the envoy said he is "optimistic" about future relations with the United States.
