China slams US labeling Confucius Institute 'foreign mission'

China's Foreign Ministry "firmly opposed" on Friday Washington's decision to demand that its Confucius Institute US Center registers as a foreign mission belonging to the Communist Party of China. The comments come after United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called the cultural center in Washington DC is "an entity advancing Beijing’s global propaganda and malign influence campaign on U.S. campuses and K-12 classrooms.|

Spokesman for ministry, Zhao Lijian (pictured), stated that China reserves the right to respond adequately.

The cultural center spat comes as tensions between the two countries rise over trade, technology and espionage. If China decides to introduce retaliatory measures for the designation, it could target one of six American Spaces in China which include the Beijing American Center, the Chengdu American Center, the Guangzhou Information Research Center or the Shanghai American Center.
