China to respond if UK changes HK citizenship practice

China will respond if the United Kingdom goes ahead with its plans to offer more privileges to Hongkongers with British National Overseas (BNO) passports, the Chinese Embassy in London stated.

"The British side declares that it will not confer the right of abode to Chinese citizens in Hong Kong who hold BNO passports," an embassy spokesperson said and claimed such a move would be in violation of international law. "We firmly oppose this and reserve the right to take corresponding measures," the spokesperson added and urged London not to interfere in Hong Kong affairs "in any way."

On Wednesday, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the UK plans to introduce a new route to British citizenship for Hong Kong residents with BNO passports in response to China's controversial national security law on Hong Kong, which he branded a "clear and serious breach of the Sino-British Joint Declaration."
