China vows to respond if US goes through with new tariffs

Chinese Foreign Ministry reiterated on Monday that Beijing will take all necessary measures to respond in the case the United States imposes new tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports. According to ministry's spokesman Geng Shuang (pictured), the new round of trade talks between the two countries scheduled for later this week should take place on an equal footing.

Over the weekend, it was reported that US President Donald Trump plans to announce new tariffs of about $200 billion on Chinese goods as early as today, while the two countries are expected to start a new round of trade negotiations later this week. However, media reports stated that Beijing is thinking about declining the offer for further trade talks after it was reported that the US prepared a new round of duties. US President Donald Trump said last week that Washington is not under pressure to make a deal with Beijing, but added China is under pressure to reach a deal with the US as its "markets are collapsing."
