China wants a ban on South China Sea drilling - report

China is looking to stop countries which are not members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) from oil drilling in the South China Sea, the Nikkei reported. According to sources familiar with the matter, China is trying to push through a document including the oil exploration ban, but ASEAN officials disagreed with it, citing conflicts with the international maritime law, the Nikkei wrote.

However, Cambodia and Laos are among members which could support Beijing at the ASEAN summit starting on Sunday. China's move is seen as being directed at the United States and its influence in the region. On Saturday, Chinese Director of the Foreign Affairs Office Yang Jiechi stated the US should "stop sending its vessels and military aircraft close to Chinese islands and reefs and stop actions that undermine China’s sovereignty and security interests."
