China warns Canada over 'consequences' of Meng's arrest

Chinese Foreign Ministry urged Ottawa on Saturday to immediately release Huawei's Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou (pictured). Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs called on the Canadian ambassador John McCallum to issue a "strong protest" over the arrest, multiple media reported.

"China strongly urges the Canadian side to immediately release the detained person... otherwise Canada must accept full responsibility for the serious consequences caused," the foreign ministry statement reads.

Earlier this week, Beijing called on Canadian authorities to release Meng, while Huawei stated that charges against its CFO were not specified. "The company has been provided with very little information regarding the charges and is not aware of any wrongdoing by Ms. Meng," it said
