China warns US to stop its South China Sea meddling

Chinese Director of the Foreign Affairs Office Yang Jiechi (pictured left) warned the United States on Saturday to stop their meddling in the South China Sea dispute and refrain from actions that undermine Beijing's authority, local media reported. Yang also called on Washington to help bring stability to the region via a "constructive" dialogue.

"The Chinese side made it clear to the United States that it should stop sending its vessels and military aircraft close to Chinese islands and reefs and stop actions that undermine China’s sovereignty and security interests," stressed the diplomat. He added: "And we urge the United States to play a constructive role for peace and stability in the South China Sea. That will certainly help reduce security risks."

The comments followed a joint meeting between Yang and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and US Secretary of Defence James Mattis.
