China's FM hopeful US will 'meet them halfway' on trade

China's Foreign Ministry stated on Thursday that Beijing is still hopeful Washington would "meet them halfway" in future negotiations concerning the ongoing trade dispute and implement the consensus reached by two sides during the latest G20 meeting in Osaka. The ministry also said that the United States President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping are maintaining contact through regular phone calls, meetings, and "other communication channels."

During a press conference, the ministry's spokesperson Hua Chunying (pictured) expressed hopes that the US would refrain from meddling into the ongoing Hong Kong protests, in line with Trump's statement that "Hong Kong was a part of China," which must be resolved "without [Washington's] advice."

Earlier, China's Finance Ministry accused the US of violating the trade consensus reached in Osaka, threatening "countermeasures" if Washington goes ahead with introducing the additional import tariffs on September 1.
