China's state media slams US for 'petty tricks'

The sincerity of the government in Beijing "is not returned with a positive response" by the United States, according to a commentary published by Taoran Notes, which accused the other country of "petty tricks" and the lack of sincerity. The entity closely connected to China's official Economic Daily warned on Friday that there was "no alternative" but to retaliate with import tariffs, as quoted by the South China Morning Post.

Discussions with US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer (pictured right) and Secretary of the Treasury Steve Mnuchin (left) broke down last week and the article adds "some" seem to believe the most populous nation "is weak and can be bullied." China is determined to stand up for itself regarding bilateral negotiations on trade and the protection of intellectual property, the unnamed author stressed and claimed discussions would rather suspend them in the wake of unfriendly moves by the other side.

The state media organization underscored it would be "meaningless" for Mnuchin to come if there is "no real concrete action" toward a comprehensive agreement.
