Christchurch suspect charged with murder

The man suspected of carrying out the attacks on two mosques in Christchurch yesterday has been charged with murder, media reported on Saturday.

The 28-year-old Australian appeared in the Christchurch District Court where he was remanded without a plea. He is set to return to court on April 5 and will face additional charges, according to police.

Media previously reported that a man attempted to burst into the courtroom during the suspect's appearance and stab him. The suspect is alleged to have carried out the shootings in two mosques in Christchurch on Friday which left 49 people dead and dozens more injured. World leaders were unanimous in condemning the act, which was described by New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern as "an extraordinary and unprecedented act of violence."
