Commission: EU backs Brexit extension in principle

European Union member states agreed "in principle" to let the United Kingdom postpone its departure from the bloc once again but are yet to decide on the length of the extension, European Commission spokesperson Mina Adreeva said on Friday.

Andreeva noted that EU ambassadors will meet again on Monday or Tuesday to make a final decision on the new deadline for Britian's departure from the EU. The member states "agreed to the principle of an extension and work will now continue in the coming days" she stressed.

Earlier, European Union's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said today's discussions were "excellent" but the EU27 could reach the final decision on a new deadline as the bloc wants to know if there will be a snap general election in the UK. On Thursday, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced he will table a motion to hold the general election on December 12. The SNP insisted it will not back the motion, while Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn noted his party's vote on the matter will depend on the EU's decision on the Brexit deadline extension.
