Communist Party wins major upset in Graz elections

The Communist Party of Austria (KPO) scored a major upset on Sunday winning the election in Graz, prompting the resignation of the mayor Siegfried Nagl.

KPO came ahead with 28.8% of the votes, while the ruling party, Austria's People Party (OVP), fell by more than 12 percentage points to land just below 26%. Nagl commented on the results saying that it is "more than painful for me and my party" as he announced his resignation. Local media outlets reported that whether Nagl will continue to lead the OVP is currently unknown.

Meanwhile, KPO candidate Elke Kahr will most likely be the first female mayor of a state capital. Kahr called the results more than surprising, but that the party has always been there for the people. KPO will now look to build a ruling coalition and has already excluded the possibility of forming one with the OVP.
