Countdown to World Expo 2030 host city vote

Member states of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) will cast their votes to decide the host city for World Expo 2030 on Tuesday, with South Korea, Italy, and Saudi Arabia competing for the prestigious opportunity to showcase their countries' innovations, achievements, and cultural diversity. Each of the three candidates will make final presentations of their Expo projects before the general assembly vote.

The mayor of Busan, South Korea's second-biggest city, Park Heong-joo, described the city's "Transforming Our World, Navigating Toward a Better Future" bid as a way to reciprocate global support during the post-Korean War recovery. Backed by Samsung and South Korea's rich entertainment industry, Busan is vying for the opportunity to host the fair in 2030 against Saudi Arabia which is said to have positioned itself as a front-runner for the event, with the Kingdom allocating $7.8 billion to support its project under the name "The Era of Change: Together for a Foresighted Tomorrow." Riyadh pledged to become the pioneer in the hosting of environmentally sustainable exhibitions, striving to achieve zero carbon emissions were it to hold the 2030 Expo.

As the only capital city in the European Union chosen for Expo 2030, the Eternal City's $6 billion proposal with the theme "People and Territories: Regeneration, Inclusion, and Innovation" was inspired by democratic values, according to Rome's Mayor Roberto Gualtieri.
