COVID vaccine approval unlikely before US election - FDA's former head

Former commissioner of the US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) Dr. Scott Gottlieb (pictured) said on Monday coronavirus vaccine candidates in the United States are not likely to "gather enough evidence to receive emergency approval" before the November presidential election.

"I think it's more likely you're going to get a top-line result some point in November and maybe be able to make a decision about an emergency use authorization after that," he stressed in an interview with CNBC, adding it could happen in October only in case the epidemiological situation in the country gets "very dense."

Previously, FDA's head Dr. Stephen Hahn hinted the agency could issue an emergency approval for a vaccine prior to completion of the phase three trials if benefits are likely to outweigh risks.
