Crypto hacking tops $3.8 billion in 2022, highest ever

During 2022, $3.8 billion were stolen from businesses related to the cryptocurrency market, making it the worst year ever, US watchdog Chainalysis reported Wednesday.

The worst peak in hacking activity was October, during which $775.7 million was stolen in 32 separate attacks. On the other hand, DeFi protocols were the victims of most episodes; these accounted for 82.1% of all cryptocurrencies stolen, for a total of $3.1 billion.

Finally, the report states that hackers linked to North Korea have been the most prolific cryptocurrency pirates in recent years.
