Czech daily COVID cases, deaths at near-record highs

The Czech Republic's health authorities registered 240 deaths attributed to COVID-19 during the past 24 hours, which is the second-sharpest daily spike in COVID fatalities, and the highest figure since early November, the country's Health Ministry unveiled on Wednesday.

During the same time, Czechia registered 16,642 new coronavirus infections, marking its third-highest daily increase in COVID cases. After the latest updates, Czechia's case tally climbed to 1,269,058, while its death toll reached 20,941.

The Czech government has previously extended the state of emergency, introduced in order to curb the spread of the virus, until March 28, while country's Prime Minister Andrej Babis announced the possibility of using Russia's Sputnik V COVID vaccine regardless of the European Medicines Agency's approval.
