Daily COVID-19 cases in Japan hit record 8,000

The number of daily recorded COVID-19 cases in Japan surpassed 8,000 for the first time on Wednesday, prompting concerns as the country hosts the Olympic Games.

While Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga denied there would be any cancellations at the Olympics, the government is also considering putting regions surrounding the Tokyo area - Chiba, Saitama and Kanagawa - under the state of emergency.

Tokyo, undergoing its fourth state of emergency until August 22, has recorded more than 3,000 new COVID-19 cases in the latest update as the numbers continued to break records for the second day in a row.
