Demand in Japan unlikely to surge - minister

Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso stated on Tuesday that he does not expect pent-up demand will soar after the end of the state of emergency. He made the remarks following Economy Minister Hiroshi Kajiyama's announcement that Japan should lift the state of emergency on October 1.

Aso saluted the Bank of Japan's efforts to reach the inflation target of 2% but added that monetary policy should work in conjunction with fiscal policies on the matter. He noted that reaching the inflation goal will require "strong consumer demand."
