Di Maio claims Salvini regrets creating govt crisis

Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Five Star Movement leader Luigi Di Maio blasted Northern League leader Matteo Salvini, who also serves as deputy prime minister alongside Di Maio, for causing a crisis within a government he himself is a part of.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Di Maio claimed Salvini now regrets calling on Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte to dissolve the government, but insisted it is now too late to reverse his actions. The Five Star Movement leader stated his party will support Conte when he faces the no-confidence vote, which Salvini's League initiated, on August 20. On the other hand, Di Maio stressed his party is not interested in a new deal with the League as a result of Salvini's actions.

Earlier this month, Salvini claimed his party can no longer govern in a coalition with the Five Star Movement due to differences between the two parties which cannot be mended and called for a snap election. He later cited disagreements about value-added tax and the fallout with France and Germany about European leadership as hurdles which led to the breakup of the coalition with the Five Star Movement.
