Disagreement on fisheries could sink Brexit deal - Coveney

The trade deal between the United Kingdom and the European Union could collapse if there is no agreement on fisheries, Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney said on Monday. He explained that this issue is more difficult than the issue of the level playing field, another point of contention in the ongoing negotiations.

"The UK is attempting to separate fisheries from other issues," he claimed, adding that the EU is "not going to play that game." Earlier, Coveney more optimistically predicted that the deal could be finalized this week. Last week's reports alleged that the EU made an offer to return some of the fish caught by its vessels in British waters, but the figures fell far short of the UK's demands.
