DoJ backs Treasury in refusal to submit Trump tax returns

United States Department of Justice published a legal opinion on Friday, stating its support for the Treasury Department's earlier decision to reject releasing six years of President Donald Trump's tax returns. Congress Democrats originally demanded the president's tax returns to be submitted and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin rejected last month a congressional subpoena requesting Trump's personal and business tax returns for the period between 2013 and 2018.

"While the Executive Branch should accord due deference and respect to congressional requests, Treasury was not obliged to accept the Committee’s stated purpose without question, and based on all the facts and circumstances, we agreed that the Committee lacked a legitimate legislative purpose for its request," the Justice Department stated in its 33-page opinion.
