DUP doesn't rule out support for new Brexit deal

The United Kingdom can only withdraw from the European Union "as one nation" and without internal trade barriers, Arlene Foster said on Friday, referring to signs of optimism on both sides about the possibility of an orderly divorce. The leader of the Democratic Unionist Party of Northern Ireland noted, however, that it remained determined to seek "democratic consent" for a solution where the province "would align alongside specific sectors of the bloc's single market."

She highlighted "the need to be flexible and look at" solutions specific for the territory. DUP vowed to "always" use its "considerable influence," Foster added and asserted its representatives are "regularly in touch" with Prime Minister Boris Johnson. "It is important to secure a balanced and sensible deal as we leave the European Union," she stated.

The party nominally supported the minority government of previous Prime Minister Theresa May but it has blocked several so-called backstop solutions.
