Ecuadorian President Lasso will not run in August elections
Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso declared on Friday that he will not run in the elections scheduled for August 20.
"I want to be clear I will not accept the nomination as a candidate for president for the next elections," Lasso told journalists while calling for parties to unite to defend democracy in the country. In a separate message published on Twitter, Lassso justified his decision by saying he was doing it out of "love for democracy and out of respect for ... citizens."
The development comes days after Lasso dissolved the opposition-led National Assembly, ending an impeachment process against him.
