Elections should be open and honest - Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted on Saturday that the upcoming elections for the State Duma should be transparent.

"Our common task is to do our utmost to ensure that the election is held openly and honestly in accordance with law, so that its results can reflect the true will of the nation, while enjoying the unconditional trust of the country’s citizens," the leader said.

Putin, who has been in power since 1999, has frequently been accused of being an authoritarian and of stifling opposition. Boris Nemtsov, one of his most vocal critics, was murdered in 2017 under unclarified circumstances, while Alexei Navalny was poisoned before being sentenced to jail.
