EMA approves 2 new Pfizer sites in Italy

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has on Monday approved two new manufacturing locations in Italy for the Comirnaty COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech.

The site in Monza is operated by Patheon Italia S.p.A while the other in Anagni is operated by Catalent Anagni S.R.L. The sites will produce finished product and are expected to supply up to 85 million additional doses to the EU in 2021.

A new ready-to-use formulation of Comirnaty was also approved by the EMA, which aims to "provide improved storage, transport and logistic options for vaccine distribution and administration" and should be available in early 2022.
