EMA approves adapted Pfizer, Moderna boosters
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) recommended on Thursday the approval of two adapted COVID-19 vaccines as booster shots. The agency greenlit the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna shots, which were modified to target the Omicron BA.1 subvariant, for people aged 12 years and above who have received at least primary vaccination against COVID-19.
The EMA said boosters targeting the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants are currently under review and a decision should be made in the coming weeks. The original vaccines will continue to be used within vaccination campaigns in the European Union, especially for primary vaccinations.
