EMA updates rare side-effect warnings for COVID vaccines

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) updated on Friday its guidance on rare side effects of coronavirus vaccines. For the Moderna shot, the EMA determined myocarditis and pericarditis can occur in very rare cases, following a review of 164 and 157 cases respectively among around 200 million doses administered in the European Union.

The EMA also advised against the Johnson&Johnson vaccine for people who have previously had capillary leak syndrome. It recommended a warning for AstraZeneca shots to raise awareness of cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome reported following vaccination. However, it stated that "at this stage the available data neither confirms nor rules out a possible association with the vaccine."
