EMA, WHO halt Spain's plan to treat COVID-19 as flu
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) halted on Tuesday Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's plans to treat COVID-19 as common flu.
"Nobody knows when we will be at the end of the tunnel. But we are not there yet (...), and we are seeing that we will have the virus become endemic. Still, I don't think we have reached this situation yet," commented the responsible for the EMA's vaccine strategy Marco Cavalieri during a press conference. The expert mentioned Omicron is highly contagious, and it is important not to underestimate it. "Let's not forget that we are still in a pandemic," he stated.
On Monday, Sanchez declared it was time to consider the COVID-19 an endemic disease similar to influenza.
