Emergency measures in Japan to be extended

Japanese minister Yasutoshi Nishimura (pictured), who is in charge of the government's coronavirus response, said on Thursday that the state of emergency will be extended until September 30 in 19 prefectures, including Tokyo, as hospitals remain overwhelmed due to the latest surge of COVID-19.

In addition to the country's capital, the restrictions will continue to be imposed in Kanagawa, Saitama, Chiba, Osaka, Hyogo, Kyoto, Hokkaido, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, Gifu, Shizuoka, Aichi, Mie, Shiga, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, and Okinawa. However, Miyagi and Okayama will exit the state of emergency on September 12 and switch to less strict measures.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is expected to officially confirm the latest government decision regarding coronavirus lockdowns later in the day.
