EP calls for full embargo on Russian oil, uranium

European Parliament (EP) on Thursday adopted a Resolution on the preparation of the EU-Ukraine Summit, asking European Union members to "increase and accelerate their military assistance" to Kiev and ban all imports of Russian oil and uranium.

The resolution, which is advisory and not mandatory in nature, urges an "immediate and full embargo on EU imports of fossil fuels and uranium from Russia, and for the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea to be completely abandoned." The text was adopted with 489 votes in favor and 36 against, with 49 abstentions.

The EP also called on member states "to continuously and proactively propose new sectors and individuals for targeting," and singled out companies such as Lukoil and Rosatom for sanctioning. The document comes a day before the scheduled summit between EU and Ukrainian political leaders.
