Erdogan says Turkish court made independent decision on Brunson

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan refused on Saturday to take credit for the release and return of the American pastor Andrew Brunson, saying instead that the Turkish judiciary made an independent decision on the matter. Erdogan's comment comes as a response to a tweet posted by his United States counterpart Donald Trump earlier today, in which he thanked him for helping in Brunson's release and announced a new chapter in strained US-Turkish relations. Trump also said that he will host Brunson later today at the White House.

"Dear Mr. President, as I always pointed out, the Turkish judiciary reached its decision independently," Erdogan wrote on his Twitter account. "I hope that the United States and Turkey will continue their cooperation as the allies that they are, and fight together against terrorist groups."
