EU, ASEAN to establish strategic partnership - Germany

The European Union and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have agreed to form a strategic partnership, Germany's Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (pictured) said on Tuesday.

"As close economic partners, we will stand up for safe and open trade routes and a free and fair trade," Maas stated, adding that the alliance will cover over one billion people and almost a quarter of the global gross domestic product. "Together, we have a strong voice in this world."

Members of the ASEAN recently also signed the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership with China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand, creating the biggest trading bloc in history.
