EU confirms deal to buy 300M Moderna vaccines

The European Commission approved on Wednesday an agreement with Moderna Inc. on purchasing 300 million additional COVID-19 vaccines in total over the next two years.

"This brings us closer to our major objective: ensure that all Europeans have access to safe and effective vaccines as quickly as possible. With a portfolio of up to 2.6 billion doses, we will be able to provide vaccines not just to our citizens, but to our neighbors and partners as well," commented European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Under the contract which was revealed in a recent report, the European Union will receive 150 million vaccine doses this year from the American manufacturer, and the same amount in 2022. Prior to this order, the bloc purchased 160 million Moderna's jabs.
