EU firms want to be part of Belt and Road Initiative - official

European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic (pictured left) stated on Thursday that European companies would gladly take part in China's infrastructure Belt and Road Initiative, but they require more transparency.

Speaking to CNBC on the sidelines of the Belt and Road Forum, Sefcovic said that banks and firms from the EU would "love to be more involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, but we need a little bit more information coming for our companies: how they can participate, how they can bid in the public procurement — and of course also the sustainable financing of this project is important because it’s raised some concerns also in Europe."

In March, Italy became the first member of the G7 to join China's Belt and Road Initiative.
