EU, Japan sign deal on hydrogen cooperation

European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson and Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry, Yasutoshi Nishimura, signed the agreement on hydrogen cooperation on Friday, with the aim of bolstering the production, trade, and distribution of "low-carbon hydrogen."

"Today's agreement confirms the commitment of the EU and Japan to work together on hydrogen, which is key for both our climate goals and energy security," said Simson, underscoring that the reached signed Memorandum of Cooperation marks "an important milestone" for EU-Japan energy partnership.

According to Simson's statement, the two parties also discussed the burning issue of energy globally, as well as liquefied natural gas (LNG) market uncertainty. Earlier this year, the block turned to Japan for assistance, requesting that it deliver more LNG shipments as the EU's sanctions against Russia threatened to limit the commodity's supply.
