EU launches in-depth probe into Nvidia-Arm deal

European Union antitrust regulators said on Wednesday they are launching an in-depth investigation into Nvidia's proposed acquisition of British semiconductor and software company Arm Ltd.

"Whilst Arm and NVIDIA do not directly compete, Arm's IP is an important input in products competing with those of NVIDIA, for example in datacentres, automotive and in Internet of Things. Our analysis shows that the acquisition of Arm by NVIDIA could lead to restricted or degraded access to Arm's IP, with distortive effects in many markets where semiconductors are used," European Commission Executive VicePresident Margaret Vestager stated. The Commission added it is set to complete the investigation by March 15, 2022.

In 2020, Nvidia reached an agreement to buy Arm from SoftBank Group Corp for $40 billion. In August, an investigation by United Kingdom Competitions and Market Authority (CMA) found that the deal raises "competition concerns."
