EU new car registrations drop 18.9% in August

The number of new passenger vehicle registrations in the European Union plummeted by 18.9% in August, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association said on Tuesday.

The total number of new registered vehicles stood at 769,525 in the EU, falling from 949,034 units in the same month in 2019. The largest drop was recorded in Romania, where new registrations plunged 51.9% year on year. When it comes to four largest markets, Germany posted the biggest drop with new registrations plunging 20%, while Italy performed best with registrations down only 0.4%.

In the January-to-August period, demand for new passenger cars in the EU fell 32%, mainly due to the coronavirus pandemic.
