The European Commission and Pfizer Inc. are inching closer to signing a deal for the US-based farmaceutical company's vaccine candidate supply, Peter Liese (pictured right), a lawmaker in the European Parliament and a member of the European People's Party, unveiled on Monday. Previously, the two sides concluded exploratory talks with Pfizer and BioNTech over the supply of 200 million vaccine doses with an option to secure another 100 million doses if needed.

"According to my information, the respective contract is about to be signed. There is an agreement that Europeans will be provided with hundreds of millions of vaccines," he asserted.

Earlier today, Pfizer and BioNTech said in a statement that the effectiveness of its vaccine among participants in the third phase trials stood at 90%, boosting hopes across the globe over containing the pandemic.
