EU presses Moscow for the release of Navalny

The European Union called on the authorities in Kremlin to effectuate the immediate freeing of Alexey Navalny, one of Vladimir Putin's most vocal critics, on the grounds of his imprisonment being solely politically motivated.

EU High Representative Josep Borrell in an official statement on Monday said: "We deplore that the Russian legal system continues to be instrumentalized against Mr. Navalny, as he now faces new criminal charges."

Borell also publicly condemned the continuing "disinformation campaign" against Navalny and his associates in the Russian state media, referencing the persecution and arrest of Liliya Chanysheva, the former head of Navalny's office in the city of Ufa, and called for their "unconditional release."
