EU ready to grant UK limited visa-free travel after Brexit

The European Council announced on Friday that it has agreed to allow United Kingdom citizens visa-free travel to European Union member states for short stays of up to 90 days within 180 days after Britain leaves the bloc, but only in case the UK decides to grant EU citizens reciprocal exemptions. The EU institution added that the council presidency, currently held by Romania, will begin negotiations on the proposal with the European Parliament.

"In the event that the United Kingdom introduces a visa requirement for nationals of at least one member state in the future, the existing reciprocity mechanism would apply and the three institutions and the member states would commit to act without delay in applying the mechanism," the European Council stressed.

The UK is scheduled to leave the EU on March 29.
