EU rejects UK's customs proposal, ministers to quit - report

The European Union rejected United Kingdom's proposal of a solution for the issue of customs after Brexit, according to a report by the Sunday Times. As a result, four ministers in Theresa May's government are on the verge of quitting, the newspaper said.

The UK proposed an "independent mechanism" which would guide London's exit from the customs union in case of a hard Brexit, but this solution was turned down by the union, which argued that only the European Court of Justice could rule in such matters. According to the Sunday Times, the proposal was seen as a key component of the negotiations by some ministers, as it provided a means to avoid activating the Irish border backstop.
