EU's Borrell: JCPOA has no alternative

The Iran nuclear deal from 2015, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) does "not have an alternative," European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said before the European Parliament on Tuesday.

Confirming that European parties to the deal initiated the JCPOA's dispute mechanism, Borrell added: "As Coordinator of the Joint Commission, I will oversee the Dispute Resolution Mechanism process. The aim of the Mechanism is to resolve issues relating to the implementation of the agreement within the framework of the Joint Commission." The EU's top diplomat also noted that the aim of the move was not to reimpose sanctions on Iran and stressed he hopes all parties will take part in the dispute mechanism process "in good faith."

Earlier in the day, United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in an interview that the JCPOA should be replaced with a new agreement.
