EU seeks 'immediate end' to Israel-Palestine violence

The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell addressed on Saturday the "extremely worrying situation" between Israel and Palestine. He stressed the need to "immediately end the grave escalation of violence, prevent its further spillover and ensure that civilians on all sides are protected."

Borrell said he has been in contact with regional leaders in order to reach a solution. He condemned "Hamas' and other groups' indiscriminate firing of rockets against civilian targets in Israel," but pointed out that, "that while Israel has the right to protect its population from these kinds of attacks, it must act proportionately and avoid civilian casualties." He reiterated the EU seeks a two-state solution based on the internationally agreed parameters, in which "both Israelis and Palestinians alike have the right to live in safety and security, freedom and democracy."
