EU summons Russian ambassador over entry ban

The Secretary-General of the European Commission Ilze Juhansone and the Secretary-General of the External Action Service Stefano Sannino summoned Russia's ambassador to the European Union on Monday to "strongly reject" the ban of eight EU diplomats from entering Russia.

The Secretaries-General stated that the ban was "purely politically motivated," and informed the ambassador they "firmly condemn it." Additionally, they noted that ongoing actions of Russia with its designation of "unfriendly states" and the expulsion of Czech diplomats are a cause for "grave concern," and they are unsure of the full impact of those actions on EU-Russia relations.

Tensions have been high between the bloc and Russia recently, with the latter deciding to impose an entry ban on eight EU nationals, a move that prompted severe outrage from EU leaders, as well as all member nations, and today's statement also came with a warning that the EU may take further retaliatory measures.
