EU to ask for 'immediate' talks with US over French digital tax

The European Union intends to seek "immediate" negotiations with the United States regarding the digital tax law, which France enacted earlier this year, saying that the WTO remains the right place to tackle mutual trade concerns, the bloc's Delegation to the United States said in a statement.

"We remain of the view that the WTO (World Trade Organization) is the place to address any trade disputes," the statement read, adding that the bloc will "therefore seek immediate discussions with the United States on how to solve this issue amicably to prevent a dispute at the WTO."

In retaliation to the tax, the Office of the US Trade Representative on Monday proposed targeting $2.4 billion worth of goods coming from France with levies of up to 100%.
