EU to impose sanctions on cyber attackers

The Council of the European Union on Friday adopted a set of measures which allows the bloc to impose sanctions against cyber attackers. These restrictive measures may target persons or entities operating outside the EU and could be imposed for attacks on countries outside the EU, as well as those against international organizations. These penalties include travel bans and potential asset freezing

Besides this, the sanctions will affect all those who provide financial, technical or material support for such attacks. Both attempted and successful online attacks which have "significant impact" fall under the scope of the latest sanctions.

The EU bill on cyber attacks was two years in the making, as the initial framework for it was signed in June 2017.
